MFC NZ Youth Camps
After having some success on the international stage, the MFC Crew wanted to come back to the club fields and hold ski camps for the new youth coming through.
In the Craigieburn Mountain Range is a community where Club Fields, & a colorful ski culture lays waiting.
This is where a group called the Mountains Freeride Cantebury Crew (MFC) began their ski journey. However, there was always a lack of older skiers to learn from, so a group was formed & stuck together to learn about freeskiing from watching ski edits & 'giving things a go.' After having some success on the world stage, the Crew wanted to come back to their clubs & hold ski camps for the new youth coming through. Featuring the world class talents of; Fiona Murray, Jamesa Hampton, Nick Pascoe, Miguel Porteous, Kenji Boekholt, & Craig Murray.
First was Broken River, a friendly club with a beautiful walk through native beech forest to reach the resort. They were greeted with fresh snow & friendly locals.
The three age groups worked through different aspects of skiing with the coaches over the two days. Building up some jumps, & a freeride course with gates. The last meeting saw a pair of Bent 100s go to a deserving Winnie Goldsbury for her top attitude & skills over the weekend.
It's a pleasure to coach such kind kids who look out for each other while keen to learn and listen. We think that is the best way to progress – when you're having fun with your friends.
Craigieburn Valley was the second Camp. While harsh conditions arrived, no complaint was heard from the Campers during the clinics; avalanche awareness, rescue situations, & essential backcountry equipment.
The second day started with a big hike up to Hamilton Peak for most of the Crew. Then some drills to focus on technique & airs for the afternoon.
The Crew headed to Mt Olympus for the final Camp. Although battling the tough conditions on the way, the excitement was high. Multiple corks 7’s & double backflips landed. With a final farewell & prize giving, everyone headed their separate ways, from shin-bang to the many grins from ear to ear.
