BACKLAND WORLD CUP FINALS REFLECT A STRONG SEASON

The Skimountaineering World Cup finals took place last weekend in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. The Backland athletes proofed their great class also in these last ISMF races of the season. Under bad weather and snow conditions they achieved six places on the podium in the daily classifications of all categories, and not at least because of those the Backland team can draw a strong season balance.

They have written the most beautiful chapters in skiing history again, this World Championship winter. They have celebrated so many wins in a row, set up world records and rocked the ski circus 18 / 19 right up to the last minute. The Atomic stars, were, are and remain a benchmark in ski racing and one fact explains everything: both the new and ‘old’ Overall World Cup winners Mikaela Shiffrin and Marcel Hirscher together have picked up 7 out of 11 possible Crystal Globes. THE GREAT SKIING EMPEROR: MARCEL BEST OF THE BEST FOR THE EIGHTH TIME IN A ROW

Including his small Crystal Globes in the Slalom and Giant Slalom he is now the Global Emperor in skiing history: on top of the eight Overall Wins he also has another dozen small Crystal Globes to add. ATOMIC ALL-ROUNDER MIKAELA: OVERALL WORLD CUP WIN #3 IN A ROW

OOPS! SHE DID IT AGAIN. Atomic superstar Mikaela Shiffrin has become the best ski racer in the world again for the third time in a row and is now Overall World Cup winner again this season. The decisive moment came in Sochi this weekend where the races were cancelled due to heavy snow. Her third large Crystal Globe is the logical result after her truly amazing winter.

MARCEL SECURES GS CRYSTAL GLOBE AND SOFIA’S WITH US UNTIL OLYMPIC GAMES 2022

Race intelligence is about making the right decisions at the right moment, even if they are risky ones. Marcel Hirscher’s start in the Combined in Bansko was a risky decision (see Marco Schwarz, who suffered a serious knee injury after a questionable jump near the finish). But they were the right decisions and important: second place in the Combined, second place in the GS, Marcel has secured the small Crystal Globe in the GS early (for the sixth time in his career) and keeps the upper hand in the Overall World Cup a solid 490 points in the lead. Even more great news for the Atomic team with a double win in the Ladies Downhill in Crans Montana! Sofia Goggia won her first race since her comeback, ahead of Redster colleague Joana Haehlen. And because everything is so easy and going successfully for Sofia, the speed queen has signed up until after the Olympic Games in 2022. And it’s all been finalized already!

FRANZ-JOSEF: THE SUPER JUMP TO BRONZE IN CROSS-COUNTRY

“If Franz-Josef can call up his talent in ski jumping that he’s capable of, then...” Up until now the Atomic combined skier Franz-Josef Rehrl was nearly rated exclusively by his ski jumping performance. Ironically, with his first appearance at the home World Championships in Seefeld the Redster athlete couldn’t call up what he’s capable of in ski jumping. And then in the 10 kilometer cross-country race the super jumper delivered a great performance to jump from 4th place into Bronze position. His support team had prepared the “Redster carbon secret weapons” for wet snow…
