We experienced the touring tow piece issues once, until I realized that there is a second locking position the lever goes into. Not a single problem since. Have even troubleshot a few other peoples tow piece issues while out on the trail. I paired these with my backland 107 in a 189cm for this season. This has proved to be a great combination as I am never worried about popping out of these bindings when dropping pillows and cliffs. Its light enough on the uphill and sturdy on the down. To be able to get that feeling of clicking in a "normal" binding when transitioning into ski mode is something that adds a sense of comfort and confidence. This is a hybrid binding that you can trust, and is a sturdy binding on the downhill. The first few days out touring with the Shift bindings definitely comes with learnings but once you know the sounds/motions it makes when things are put into place the binding is v reliable and super easy to use. Examples would be like for locking the brake, the first few times I noticed the brake coming down but then I realized I wasn't holding the brakes up enough when flipping the lever to tour mode. I keep this binding on my Bent 120's for a mix of resort skiing and side country. All I have to do is ski with my avy equipment and my skins in my pack and I'm ready to go straight from the resort into the side country. I have never had a single issue with this binding, I feel confident hard-charging inbounds moguls/cliffs, yet they're light enough to walk uphill alongside my friends with tech bindings. There is a little bit of nuance to figuring them out at first (Pull the lockout lever on the toe ALL THE WAY towards to make sure you don't step out while touring), but once you have them dialed they do it all. The versatility of this binding is amazing, and the stability you have when skiing downhill was quite surprising as I did expect it to be a little less stable than the Warden 13 I was on prior to the Shifts. As someone who also does have knee issues, the times I have crashed with these bindings, my knees felt protected and the binding released at the perfect time.
