Bakuriani 2023: Freeski Takes the Podium at World Champs

What a week for Atomic skiers at the FIS world championships! Great skiing from our entire team as they put on a show for the entire world to see. Huge congrats to the entire team, and for our podium athletes who earned a total of 5 Medals; 2 gold medals, 1 silver, and 1 bronze in Slopestyle, Pipe, and Big Air.

This year, the Freeski Team traveled far and wide to make it for the World Championships in Bakurianai, Georgia.

Megan Oldham continued her hot streak this season, landed both runs, and left 2nd place. Megan's run included back-to-back double corks and a backside 630 spin out of an up rail, and she finished only .20 points away from first place. For Meg, though, she wasn't finished and ended up skiing well in the Big Air and also earned a Bronze medal with her Dub Cork 1260 Mute and Swich Dub Cork 900 combo.

Also competing in the Women's event was Tess Ledeux. During the Slopestyle event, Tess had some speed troubles during her run that caused her to come up short and crash hard, leaving her finishing in last place for the Finals. In Big Air though, this was a different story. Tess used this as fuel, skied her heart out to land her Double Cork 1620 on the first jump, and in her third jump, she rode away smooth from a Switch Double Cork 1260 to earn the Gold Medal to reclaim the title of World Champion once more.

Speaking of World Champions, a new one was crowned in the Halfpipe. 

The halfpipe team has grown a lot in the last year, with two big podium finishers from the Men's side being Brendan Mackay and Jon Sallinen. Brenden and Jon battled it out for the top positions during the Final. First, with Brendan taking the lead, Jon upped his score to an excellent 95.75. Then in the third and final run, Brendan landed arguably the best run of his life with such variety and amplitude that it was clear he would be crowned the new world champion. This was confirmed with a score of 97.25 and secured a Gold and Silver medal for the Atomic team.

Truly incredible skiing done by the entire team, some of the best skiing to date from many, and lots of potential beginning to show for many of our younger riders. The biggest congratulations to our athletes for their remarkable victories.
