Shiffrin, Goggia, Kilde, Braathen: Best of World Cup

It was an extraordinary season for the alpine racing team of Atomic – a season which started with 7 out of 8 races getting cancelled and ended with 6 out of 10 World Cup globes for the Redster team. Let’s take a closer look in the crystal globe(s).

3+1+1+1=6 globes for the Redster team

31 victories make Atomic the winningest brand of the 2022/23 season. 14 of them were picked up by the newly crowned greatest skier of all time, Mikaela Shiffrin. The big globe for the Overall World Cup is the well-deserved reward for this, and  she eventually set a new personal best for season points with 2206.

No less impressive are her discipline stats: In 11 slaloms, she finished on the podium 10 times, six of which were first place finishes; in the giant slalom, Mikaela won seven races, undisputedly clinching these globes early in the season. Not to forget her triple triumph with three wins in three days in Semmering.

18 speed races – 13 podiums: That sums up the season of Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who took home the downhill globe for the second time in a row.  One of his impressive triumphs was surely in Kitzbühel where he broke his hand in training, avoided a horrible crash in the first race only thanks to his incredible physical condition, and finally succeeded in the second race.

Broken hand? It's something Sofia Goggia can tell a thing or two about. It happened in December in St. Moritz when she once again proved that she is a true warrior at heart by rupturing her metacarpal, having surgery in the evening, and winning the race the day after in impressive style. It was one of the foundations for her fourth DH globe, the third in a row. Thumbs up, Sofia!

While all these globes were fixed before the finals, the men's slalom provided a real thriller on the very last day, with a happy end for the Redster team. Lucas Braathen, leading the cup before the ultimate race, showed nerves of steel and provided the perfect closing of the season with the first crystal globe of his young career.

In total, 11 different athletes finished at least once on the podium from October to March.

Other Redster athletes who made their names known this season:

  • Marco Schwarz: a well-known name who finally returned to the World Cup podium in January at the very first night GS in Schladming and climaxed with his first GS victory in Palisades Tahoe, followed by his first speed podium in the Soldeu SG.
  • Andreas Sander: In the super G in Aspen, our 2021 vice World Champion skied on the podium for the first time in his career, and now the knot seems to be burst as he added another one in the downhill race at the finals in Soldeu.
  • Florian Schieder: Probably one of the most sensational podium finishes this season was provided by the Italian when he ended up second in the legendary Hahnenkamm downhill without any top-10 result before that and after a severe knee injury.

“WHAT IS IMPRESSIVE IS THAT MORE THAN HALF OF THE PODIUM FINISHES WERE VICTORIES!”
Christian Höflehner, Atomic Race Manager
