For the first time this Olympic winter the top slalom athletes encountered icy conditions. For Marcel this was a rare pleasure. But one that he mastered successfully. 93 hundredths in the lead, twice the fastest time for the run, the fastest in five out of eight sections. Remarkable: with his fifth slalom win in succession the World Cup leader (now 174 points in the lead and exactly one more point than a year ago) won on the same skis as previously in soft snow conditions in Zagreb or Adelboden. The only difference: better edge grip thanks to different preparation. “Nowadays everything is much simpler and easier. The set up works really well. But this doesn’t mean that I’m not unbeatable”, Marcel summarised his performance in Wengen, which now means he’s very close to Hermann Maier’s record (54:53 World Cup wins).
