After a break of almost one month the Ski Mountaineering World Cup started off again in Verbier, Switzerland. For the Atomic athletes already the World Championships in 2015 proved to be very successful on Verbier snow. The promise of those World Championships was kept this weekend: the Backland athletes ran and skied at the highest level. Rémi Bonnet and Davide Magnini won 3 out of 6 places on the podium; an impressive start to the main phase of the ISMF World Cup.

On the first day of competition a vertical race took place approximately over the route of the World Championships. In tough conditions with regards to the right choice of skins and regarding preparations due to rain and snowfall, the Swiss Rémi Bonnet left the competition behind on home soil. His very first World Cup victory confirms his excellent shape that already helped the 25-year-old win the vertical title at the Swiss Ski Mountaineering Championships recently.

On the second day it looked at first as though Bonnet would once again claim victory at the individual race. Only during the last section of the incredibly thrilling race Bonnet had to give in to two better downhill skiers. With an excellent downhill and explosive finish fellow Atomic athlete Davide Magnini placed before Bonnet. The Italian hadn’t been at his best during the vertical race and unsure if it had just been an off-day or a medical issue, he had fallen short on everybody’s expectations. At the individual race however he presented himself in top shape again, gained position after position during the up- but also during the downhill and claimed 2nd place overall on the podium in the end. This was his second top three finish in this World Cup winter and in his first year in the senior category.

Rémi Bonnet after his successful racing weekend:
„This was truly a great weekend. During my vertical race victory I felt really good and the skis including the skins worked really well. During the individual race all 4 uphill sections went well. I was overtaken by Robert Antoniolli during the last downhill and unfortunately lost against Davide Magnini on the home straight.“

Davide Magnini after his successful individual race:
“I am really happy with today’s result, which I didn’t expect after the bad feeling during the vertical race. During the first uphill it didn’t go smoothly yet, but I was able to contain the distance to the leaders. During the second half of the race I was able to gain positions and just before the last downhill I was only 30 seconds behind. Then I did take a risk: the skier in 4th position was just behind me and I seized the opportunity to pass Rémi Bonnet with more power on the home straight to secure 2nd place.”

For the Backland athletes the Ski Mountaineering World Cup continues without break. Already at the beginning of next week they will travel to the French village of Flaine, which will host an individual race on the 5th February 2021 and a sprint race on the 6th February.
