The Atomic skimountaineers started into their season last weekend at the ISMF skimountaineering World Cup.
In Andorra, they took part in an individual and a vertical race. With the best time in the Individual Italian Damiano Lenzi was able to achieve the best result of the weekend by scoring a second rank. Why the best time does not mean victory?
INDIVIDUAL RACE WITH THE FASTEST TIME FOR ATOMIC
A difficult alpine individual race led the World Cup season to a start in Font Blanca, Andorra. The Italian athlete Damiano Lenzi was able to reach the finish line first after an astounding race. Due to a broken crampon, a penalty minute was added to his time and threw him back on rank 2. Big was the anger about the lost victory: "I could defend the first position in the race, with a lead of up to one minute. During the last carrying passage, one of my crampons broke, and then slid off my shoe. My physical shape is great, and that's why I am happy about being on the podium. Still, the jury's decision is annoying, because the rules would have left room for interpretation."
Mireia Miro achieved a rank 8 in the women's competition, which took place at the same time. She was satisfied with her result: "Considering this was the first race of the season, the result is good. I am in the right shape, but my legs did not really run like the head wanted them to. All in all, it was positive, but there are some things that need to be improved until next weekend."
VERTICAL RACE WITH FURTHER GOOD RESULTS
On the second day in the vertical race in Arinsal, Damiano Lenzi fought a fast fight with little distance within the top athletes. While he could keep up with the podium until about half of the race, he had to make do with rank 4 after reaching the finish. Nevertheless, he is happy: "I was a bit tired after the race of the previous day, but I am satisfied with my physical shape. I am happy with the fourth rank, even though I haven't really digested the lost victory of the individual race. Mireia Miro finished eighth again in the vertical competition. As the individual race was rather hard for her and also because the vertical race is not her strength, it is a very good result and a sign for the strength she has already gathered.
The start into the World Cup season has been successful for the Atomic athletes. In addition to Lenzi and Miro, Iwan Arnold from Switzerland, Samuel Equy from France and not least the ÖSV athletes Armin Höfl and Daniel Zugg were able to score in the first competitions. Patrick Tritscher, responsible for Sports Marketing Backcountry, is satisfied: "First of all the results prove that our equipment is working great. Outstanding clearly is the strong performance by Damiano Lenzi in both competitions. After a difficult season last year, he finds himself in those ranks again that accord with his capacities. Mireia is running near the top at the moment, and I'm sure she will be showing even better results. It is enjoyable that all Atomic athletes have improved compared to last year. I'm looking forward to the next competitions."
SECOND STATION OF WORLD CUP ALREADY NEXT WEEKEND
In less than a week, the ISMF World Cup is to continue in the French Pyrenees. The teams will move a few kilometers from Andorra to Cambre d'Aze, where an individual and a sprint race will take place next weekend.
