With a victory for Damiano Lenzi at the high alpine Italian classic race, Trofeo Mezzalama, the record season finds its end for the Atomic athletes. The past winter was unbelievably successful, and the whole team was able to score high on their Backland equipment. The list of successes is almost too long to be true.
FIRST LENZI WITH A VICTORY AT THE ISMF WORLD CUP FINAL
At the last ISMF World Cup in Val d’Aran, Spain, the Italian Backland hero Damiano Lenzi reached the top spot on the podium as a confirmation of his amazing World Cup season. He dominated the race weekend, was ranked 2. after a ‘hand-in-hand finish’ with the winner in the individual race and celebrated on the next day a victory in the vertical race.
THEN A STUNNING END OF THE SEASON FOR LENZI AT THE TROFEO MEZZALAMA
Lenzi proofed his physical shape again at the Italian long distance classic Trofeo Mezzalama. The race, designed for teams of three, is known as very difficult and one of the hardest races in the skimo-circus. Together with his team colleagues, Damiano Lenzi achieved this important victory after a hard fight over two 4000-Meter peaks in the Monte Rosa area.
FASZINATINGLY GREAT SEASON ACHIEVEMENT IN THE TEAM
Damino Lenzi finished the season on spot 3 in the Individual World Cup and in the Overall World Cup - instead of two possible discipline globes. This was due to two strongly-discussed penalties he had to face at two World Cup events and each took away the event victory. With victories in the Pierra Menta, the Adamello Ski Raid, and the Trofeo Mezzalam he finishes ‘La Grande Course’ race series as the overall winner. Together with two Gold- and 2 Silver-medals at the World Championships and with the ISMF Vertical World Cup title, this is an exceptional proof of his performance, which could not be clearer as with a lead with high margin in the actual ISMF world ranking. Happiness, but also melancholy that more could have been possible, can be felt with Lenzi: ‘I am very happy with my physical shape over the months and glad that I am provided with the best material. I want to thank Atomic, because I was not affected by material problems and working well together was important for sum of these results. That I was the strongest athlete of this season unfortunately does not show in all the World Cup rankings. It’s a bit of a pity that I could not achieve the overall World Cup’.
Swiss Iwan Arnold came home from the World Championships with 2 Gold medals and scored in this winter his first Sprint World Cup victory. The third rank in the ISMF Sprint Overall World Cup mirrors this great performance throughout the season.
Spanish Mireia Miro got 2 Silver medals at the World Championships.
The Austrians were successful with Atomic material as well, Daniel Zugg achieved rank 3 in the Sprint in Mondole with the first podium rank of all times for Austria in this discipline.
The young and very talented athlete Samuel Equy from France achieved his first World Cup victory in the Espoirs category in the individual race at the Mondole event.
US-American John Gaston scored high at the World Championships as well, won every competition in the USA, in which he started. He also ranked 1st at the Grande Traverse event in Aspen with a fabulous race record time.
MOTIVATION FOR ALTENMARKT
In the Atomic homebase in Altenmarkt, Salzburg, Patrick Tritscher, responsible for Sports Marketing Backcountry Touring, sums up a winter of records: „This season was unbelievable. The history of our brand in competitive skimountaineering is relatively short, but especially this winter, Atomic was able to establish itself as a constant factor. The Backland-products worked perfectly in all conditions, and the athletes could rely on the performance with 100%; an enormously important component for this success. We have to thank the whole team in product development, who have done great work over the past years. Now, we already look into the future. We will further on give the best for our athletes, their fans, our customers, for unique emotions in this amazing sport.’
