THE SECOND PART OF THE 8TH ISMF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ENDED AS IT STARTED

The Backland athletes were able to keep their strong momentum, to achieve further medals and top ranks, and to make these championships the most successful for Atomic in history.

In the second part of the world championships, those skimo races were held, which take place on prepared courses. In the vertical race, the Backland UL 65, especially adapted to the allowed minimum weight, and the Rocker-skins were in use. In the sprint race and in the relay, skin models with an ideal grip-and-glide compromise and skis with the best edge grip went in action.

IWAN ARNOLD (SUI): DOMINATES THE SPRINT RACE

The Swiss rocket Iwan Arnold could fix the hoped-for world champion’s title with a mixture of tactics and speed. The pre-runs he accomplished with reserves, and in the final he succeeded with an attack in the right moment, with perfect changes, and with a faultless descent.

“This race was absolutely my focus during the preparation for this season. All the better that the physical shape, the changes and the material fitted perfectly.”

Iwan Arnold

And another Gold: with a furious start – he was the fastest of the first runners - the Swiss team went into lead right at the beginning of the relay race and Arnold finally earned a second gold medal.

DAMIANO LENZI (ITA): DOUBLE SILVER AS EXTRA

After the two gold medals in the individual and the team races, the strong Italian scored twice again. In the vertical race, he tried to catch victory by attacking the leader throughout the second half of the competition. Even though he remained second, he can be satisfied with a maximum performance he threw out and the outcome of it. In the relay, Lenzi and his team colleagues stepped on the podium again: with the second rank. Lenzi himself as the final runner brought tension back into the race. By only four seconds the ‘Squadra Azzurri’ realized the silver medal in the end.

Damiano Lenzi will be immortalized as the most successful athlete of 2017’s world championships with two gold and two silver medals.

MIREIA MIRO (ESP)

Miro took another silver medal in the relay race after silver in the team race. At the end of the exhausting world championships, she showed all her skills for the team and could tick off the 2017 championships positively, having received two medals.

DANIEL ZUGG (AUT)

Austrian Daniel Zugg provided evidence of his strong physical shape. Already in the sprint race, he achieved a great result with rank 9, and with rank 12 in the vertical race, he confirmed the positive development.

“The hard work of our athletes in training and the meticulous work when it comes to optimizing skis and skins details by the ATOMIC-product-crew clearly pays off, considering such emotional days like those in Alpago-Piancavallo”

Patrick Tritscher

The next station of the skimountaineers is the the 4-days Grand Course race ‘Pierra Menta’ next week and the world cup in Mondole (ITA) from March 24-26, 2017.
