Every year the traditional World Cup opening race in Sölden has a touch of ski lottery about it. It’s only a first positioning, which carries more weight being the first giant slalom, than the result in a long season itself. Redster star Mikaela Shiffrin came in 5th place. One mistake on the extremely dry race course (US-snow!) on the Rettenbach Glacier cost her a place on the podium and maybe even the victory.
The ladies have already started their season in Sölden, but the men’s opening was postponed until Levi as their race was cancelled due to bad weather. After a bit of a defensive 1st run Mikaela Shiffrin came in in 2nd place. After her magnificent performance in training runs she was less than happy about her run. Although, or maybe because of this, most experts expected her to win. In the end she only managed 5th place. Disappointed? ”I know which mistake cost me precious time. And I know that I’m fast: my skiing just needs to adjust to the material’s performance, then everything will be fine”, as the World Cup winner quickly put the race behind her again in the Atomic Facebook Livestream. Redster colleague Sofia Goggia also had to do this after she failed to complete her 1st run, whilst the Japanese skier Ando Asa ticked off her first six World Cup points. Special hats off to her that she managed to do this in Sölden’s difficult giant slalom.
The next races are in Levi on the Arctic Circle on 11th / 12th November. Last year it was a double win for the Redster slalom team there: Mikaela Shiffrin is the Ladies’ defending champion; Marcel Hirscher won the Men’s race. Whether he will be able to start in Levi this year still needs to be decided.
