The series of Backland victories goes on: Atomic skimountaineers are racing from victory to victory with their Backland UL 65 ski. After the success in the ISMF World Championships, they can also achieve superb results in the races of the ‘La Grande Course’ races in the western Alps.
In the prestigious team stage race Pierra Menta, Italian Damiano Lenzi was able to achieve an outstanding overall victory with individual victories on all four days. With a lead of more than 18 minutes over 10,000 meters in altitude and 100 kilometers in distance, Lenzi and his colleague Matteo Eydallin dominated the competition.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH, TACTICS AND TOP-MATERIAL
After a DNF at last year's Pierra Menta and with recently splendid physical shape, Lenzi started into the first stage carefully, and only in the second half, he accelerated and built the basis for his success.
The second stage was rather difficult due to the heavy snow and proved to be a severe test for athlete and material.
For Lenzi, there was a short moment of shock: "We tried to give all we have in the last ascent and worked up a lead of 2 minutes. Unfortunately, we lost our way then in the descent, but we could safely bring our victory to the finish line."
Day 3 and 4 ran just like desired, the lead could be increased day after day, and in the end the result was a brilliant victory. Lenzi analyzes: "We didn't have difficulties during all four days, no crash, no injuries, and no problems with material. Something like that can only work with experience, you have to be able to dose the speed and to plan the 4 days in the right way. That experience decides the difference between flying and dying. The race was perfect, I enjoyed it."
Damiano Lenzi reached the top with his Backland UL 65, but also other athletes of the Atomic-family scored high at Pierra Menta. With rank 8, 20-year-old French Samuel Equy, jumped into the top-ten ranks with his team. The American team with John Gaston finished the race with a great result on rank 17.
Now, the skimountaineers will head to the ISMF world cup in Mondole (ITA) from March 24 to March 26, 2017. Afterwards, the next ‘La Grande Course’ race is scheduled in the course of this year's Adamello Ski Raid on April 2, 2017.
