The elated Atomic athlete Andreas Hatveit is on top of the world! A flawless performance at the Austrian Freeski Open, presented by Atomic, earned him a second consecutive gold medal at the Slopestyle event in Kaprun, Austria.
Celebrating it’s tenth anniversary this year, the Austrian Freeski Open is undeniably one of the premier freeski events in Europe. Countless top athletes flock to Kaprun from all over the globe to compete on the world renown Kitzsteinhorn glacier. ATOMIC is also the proud head sponsor of the AFO, Europe’s only AFP Gold level slopestyle event.
BIGGER THAN EVER
The slopestyle course on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier held the spectators in awe; “the course had great jumps and an incredible overall flow” said defending champion Andreas. The overall length of the course was longer than usual, giving the athletes plenty of time to set up between tricks. It included a bonk feature at the top going into a flat-down gap box or a down rail, both jib features required athletes to showcase their creativity. The jibs flowed into a hip gap then a flat barrel rail, right in front of the spectators. The jumps provided the finale; a poppy 60 foot step over followed by a 70 foot step down with a long landing. The feature rich course, the countless spectators and the fantastic weather insured that the tenth anniversary of the Austrian Freeski Open was bigger and better than ever.
ATOMIC athlete Andreas Hatveit was on his game all weekend; slowly building on a technical run
over the qualifiers and semi finals. In the finals he pulled out all the stops, with a switch 360 nose-totail tap, switch on front switch up to 270 out on the flat down gap, followed by a rodeo 900 safety on the hip, switch 270 on 630 off the barrel, a rightside double cork 1260 mute grab finishing off with a switch double 1260 safety. The combination of very difficult tricks and flawless execution put Andreas ahead of the rest with a score of 94.25; Gus Kenworthy and Oystein Braten rounded off the podium. “I am so pumped to have skied well and to win again is the icing on the cake.” Andreas said after winning his second second consecutive gold at the AFO. “Next focus is European X Games and then of course getting back to my wife who is expecting our first child early April.” Congratulations to Andreas Hatveit, on a deserved win and good luck for X Games and of course your upcoming fatherhood. Fellow ATOMIC team member Luca Tribondeau also won the Bronze medal in the Austrian Championship. Look out for this 15 year old prodigy to step on more podiums in the future.
