25 days after first place in Schladming, Marcel Hirscher continued his series of victories on the ATOMIC D2 RACE. The victory in giant slalom in Bansko was his tenth in World Cup, the seventh in this season. In Bulgaria, the ATOMIC star could put on the red jersey of the World Cup leader in the giant slalom ranking. In the overall World Cup ranking Hirscher is currently missing 48 points for the second position. A slalom race is scheduled for Sunday.
“Maybe this was the best giant slalom of my life“, an enthusiastic Marcel Hirscher said after his spectacular performance on the course called Banderiza. In the first heat, it was due to amazing body control that the ATOMIC racer could prevent a crash only a few gates before the finish. He reached best time that lasted until Ted Ligety, then still leader of the giant slalom ranking, could beat the 22-year-old athlete from Salzburg by 16 hundredths of a second. In the finish of the second run, Hirscher kicked it up a gear and eventually he won impressively by 1,39 seconds. “I am really happy that I kept fighting in the first run. Another two millimeters further away and I would have crashed. This is the amazing thing about racing: you give 110 percent, you’re more out than in somehow and still you win the race!”
This time, tactics were different from the usual Hirscher manner, “I used the same pair of skis for both runs. The D2 RACE did an incredible job in the first heat. I’ve never had that much flow and speed in my career. My dad, Edi (ATOMIC ski-tech Unterberger) and me came up with something ingenious.“ In the overall World Cup ranking, Marcel Hirscher is currently 118 respectively 48 points behind Kostelic and Feuz.
Tina Weirather’s forth place at the dress rehearsal for the Olympic Games
This was a solid dress rehearsal for the Olympic Games by Tina Weirather in Sochi. The 22-year-old Liechtensteiner finished forth on the 2.713m long, selective Olympic slope Rosa Khutor. Alice McKennis, an ATOMIC colleague of the same age, finished on tenth place, which was her second top-10 result in this season.
