Double pleasure. Marcel Hirscher and Benjamin Raich raced to a double victory on the Atomic D2 race on one of the most difficult giant slalom slopes in the world cup. After his slalom victory in Zagreb, Marcel Hirscher reached the top of the podium for the second time within 48 hours. For the first time after his cruciate ligament rupture in February 2011, Benjamin Raich reached the podium.

Benjamin Raich and his ATOMIC ski-tech Robert Bürgler were smiling like winners in the finish of Adelboden. Raich, “During Christmas break, we tested a lot, we made progress. We now used a new doubledeck that had never been used in a race before. I really have to thank Robi, because he keeps on developing the material with me and the trainers.“ Bürgler and Hirscher’s ski-tech Edi Unterberger deserve some sort of Destinations Points Award: they put the precious slalom skis of Zagreb on board of their ATOMIC vans, drove to the home-base in Altenmarkt, took D2 Race for the giant slalom with them, slept for 3.5 hours and then drove to Adelboden.

“We were really close. Benni had a fantastic race, I am really happy for him. He’s a legendary skier“, Adelboden winner Marcel Hirscher paid his respects to his ATOMIC colleague on the 2nd place. The passionate D2 Race fan Hirscher about the performance of his material, “The race setup was a question of fine-tuning. The changing conditions, the slope groomed with water. Compared to the other races so far, this time the edges of the skis were more important. Edi managed a perfect tuning.“ Marcel Hirscher can extent his overall World Cup leadership (a total 625 points, 169 points ahead of Svindal) at the slalom in Adelboden on Sunday.
