Kilian Jornet leads the World Cup after a victory in Diablerets

Kilian Jornet ends the weekend with two victories in the Ski Mountaineering World Cup. Jornet’s victory in the Vertical Race of this morning strengthens his leadership in the Championship.

"Today's race was hard fought and differences were minimal. My assessment of the weekend is very good and I also managed to put myself in top position of the World Cup rankings. Nonetheless, the score difference is not very high so I’ll have to give everything of myself in the final round, which will decide the Championship.", said Kilian Jornet

This has been a perfect weekend for Kilian Jornet, who has won the two races in the Ski Mountaineering World Cup. Yesterday’s victory was in the Individual Race and today’s was in the Vertical Race. Jornet scored some points which will be vital towards the Championship and he stands now at first position of both the individual and combined races in the World Cup, with only more race to be disputed.

Kilian Jornet worked hard to achieve a victory in les Diablerets (Switzerland) this morning. He started off alongside a group of skiers and found it hard to open up a space among his opponents. He finally managed to impose his pace and crossed the finishing line with a time of 22'51''. As Jornet stated: "It has been a very uneasy and fast race. From the start, I had to give the maximum of myself to get a few seconds of advantage. In the end I did it, so, once again, I am glad by the result." The Vertical Race of today closed the World Cup of this modality, the winner of which is Damiano Lenzi, followed by Matheo Jacquemoud and Kilian Jornet himself.

This morning's victory assures the Catalan a chance to score vital points towards the Championship, and places him in the first position in the overall rankings. After the race he stated: "I am very satisfied with the result because I managed to reach that top position despite having missed a race. Nonetheless, the score difference is not very high so I’ll have to give everything of myself in the final round, which will be decisive. This one is showing to be a very tight Championship and that is always exciting."

The last event will take place in Tromsö, Norway, in April.
