BENJAMIN WEGER HEADS TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH THREE PODIUM PLACES

Place 3 for Benjamin Weger in the sprint of Kontiolahti, the last Biathlon World Cup station before the World Championships. Two weeks before the World Championships in Ruhpolding, the Swiss achieved his third podium place of the season racing with the ATOMIC WORLD CUP SKATE. Just in time for the World Championships, his ATOMIC colleague Christoph Sumann made his way back to the world’s elite by ranking sixth in pursuit.

ATOMIC Young Gun Benjamin Weger (22) will head to the World Championships in Ruhpolding (29 February to 11 March) ranking fifth in the Biathlon World Cup. The student, who is fluent in four languages, has gained 506 World Cup points with 7 top-10 results, of which three were third places. This weekend, podium place number 3 was added in the 10km sprint in Kontiolahti where temperature reached icy -18 degrees Celsius. After a shooting without any mistakes, Weger was still in the lead a few hundred meters before the finish, but in the end he missed his first Word Cup victory by 1.6 seconds. In the 12.5km pursuit the athlete from Valais was in the lead, but after two mistakes in the shooting in the standing position he lost his top position and finished seventh.

Sumann in shape for the World Championships

Another ATOMIC athlete contributed to the story of the 12.5km pursuit: Christoph Sumann, who ranked eighth in sprint, 17.8 seconds behind 1st place. The Austrian was among the best racers, but after two shootings lying down without mistakes he had to take penalty loops after the shootings in standing position. He finished sixth – a sixth place had been the best result of this season so far – and confirmed the upward tendency, “At the moment, I feel very good and I realize how I’m improving physically. The mistakes were marginal, but I’m satisfied with the race and the result.”

ATOMIC athlete Miroslav Matiasko was also happy about a podium place. The Slovak reached third place with the mixed relay.
