Schladming. Gold in the team event, silver in the giant slalom, slalom world champion: Marcel Hirscher was able to turn the most difficult task of his career so far into a chapter of enthusiastic ski history. The World Ski Championships 2013 in Schladming ended with his world champion title as a Hirscher heroic epic. “I was told: To win gold at home championships – that is something only the really big athletes achieve.“ This was Marcel’s first comment on his victory. How true! “There is a new slalom world champion every other year. Bu there has never been one before that won on skis developed by himself,“ Marcel said happily.

In Schladming big Hirscher stories were created. 2012: an impressive victory of the night race, but then an unjustified rumor about straddling a gate occurred. Only a few weeks later he crowned his sensational season by winning the overall World Cup. And now, at these home WSC, the most difficult task of his career so far followed, “You can try to make yourself believe whatever you want, but you feel that for months certain expectations have been built up and you also feel it in your body,“ Marcel said. When the ski superstar started his WSC performance in the second week of the WSC, he had to act as the “saver of the ski nation Austria“ since no medals were won in the speed event. He came, saw and conquered. “The gold medal in the team event was a major relief, also for me,“ he said.

Despite it all he could not sleep before the WSC giant slalom: A displaced vertebra, pain, constant therapy to be able to start at all. But once again Marcel Hirscher was able to show his qualities in a difficult situation: silver! This was his first individual medal. He achieved what he had defined as his goal for these home World Ski Championships: two ambitious medals.

Marcel, “The showdown would be the WSC slalom, that had always been clear. I really was the favorite. The absolute highlight, the race of all races, the biggest hype in the end! A full stadium, millions in front of TVs at home. You better not think about all of this! You only have to think about skiing, about the fact that it’s just a game.“ That’s what he thought. That’s how he raced. And he won! Once again – in this amazing career where he finished on the podium 40 times in 101 World Cup races, 18 times he was the winner. Now the ski superstar is also slalom world champion.

“Right now I’m still overwhelmed by all these impressions. It will take some time until my mind calms down. One thing is great: There is a new slalom world champion every other year. There has never been one that was able win gold on skis that were developed by himself.“ Now Marcel Hirscher and Atomic have not only won the most important award for the Redster ICON story, the ISPO Award, but also the most important medal of these World Ski Championships…
