JOSSI WELLS TAKES GOLD AT THE LONDON FREEZE!
ATOMIC athlete Jossi Wells continues his already strong 2011/12 winter season with victory at one of the biggest inner city big air events last weekend. The London Freeze attracts riders from across the globe and is one of the most highly respected titles on the big air calendar.
The European inner-city big air competitions are among the most coveted titles on the freestyle circuit. As the opening events of the season, they are a chance for competitors to lay down their biggest tricks and send out a message of intent to their rivals. ATOMIC athlete Jossi Wells continued his run of form from his 3rd place finish at Freestyle.ch with a win at the London Freeze last weekend.
EARLY SIGNS OF INTENT
The iconic and impressive Battersea Power Station that acts as background to the London Freeze was upstaged on Friday night by the freestyle action taking place around it. ATOMIC athletes Jossi Wells and Elias Ambühl were both looking to build on their success from Freestyle.ch in Zurich, where Elias had claimed gold and Jossi bronze. Elias looked unstoppable with his double corked 1440º mute grab. Jossi was also looking good, and one of the few people to drop into the jump switch, with a switch double 1080º safety grab. It was no surprise to see them both in the last sixteen and the finals. With a head to head format for qualified riders, the athletes were only three rounds away from the super final.
The seeding for the head to head rounds was based upon the qualifying scores, and both ATOMIC athletes easily made it through their first battles to the last eight. Unfortunately it was at this point that the two riders met in an unbelievable quarter final. Elias Ambühl was first out of the gate and laid a high marker with another textbook double corked 1440º. Jossi Wells didn’t hold back either and found his best switch double 1080º of the night, displaying huge amounts of style. The difference was a mere point to Jossi. On their second jump Elias fell and effectively handed Jossi the pass to the next round, the judges described it as one of the best head to heads of the evening. ATOMIC athlete Jossi Wells then went on to win the event, beating Oscar Scherlin in the final with the trick that had been serving him well all evening, the switch double corked 1080º. It was another good weekend for both of the ATOMIC athletes, and a continuation of their excellent start to the season.
