KILIAN JORNET FINISHES A SUCCESSFUL SEASON WITH SECOND PLACE IN THE TROFEO MEZZALAMA
Atomic athlete Kilian Jornet was able to finish a successful winter ski mountaineering season with second place in the Trofeo Mezzalama (Ita).
The Trofeo Mezzalama, held on 05.04.2013, is one of the great ski mountaineering classics. The technically difficult route, which is around 45 kilometers long and has several sections over 4,000 meters above sea level, makes the biannual race one of the toughest competitions in this competitive sport. There was a correspondingly large number of top athletes competing to win the race. Kilian Jornet
was able to secure second place together with his two teammates, Frenchmen William Bon Mardion and Matheo Jacquemoud. The team of three crossed the finish line in the Valle d'Aosta only a minute behind the Italian winners with a total time of 4hrs 17min 37sec.
"I felt no good at all before and even during the race, but thanks to my teammates William and Matheo we were able to finish the competition with a good second place. I had a really interesting and successful season this year. I am very satisfied with my results in the World Cup and the World Championships, and I also had a great experience in Nepal," says Kilian Jornet, looking back on the winter season.
With a gold and a bronze medal at the World Championships in Pelvoux (FRA) in February, as well as two wins and a third place at the World Cup, ATOMIC athlete Kilian Jornet can look back on the season with real satisfaction. After several weeks in Nepal, the exceptional Spanish athlete also visited the Austrian mountains and participated in the first ATOMIC Waymaker. Teams of three had to display their athletic, skiing and mountaineering versatility, and were evaluated by a jury over two days of competition. "It's a brand new competition format that goes back to the roots of the sport, because ski touring is about the journey, not the destination," says Kilian Jornet.
