KILIAN JORNET CLAIMS HIS SECOND WORLD CUP VICTORY OF THE SEASON
The Atomic athlete Kilian Jornet took first place in the individual race on the second World Cup weekend in Martigny (SUI).
Jornet managed to position himself out in front of a packed field from the very start of the Individual Race, taking advantage of his strong performance on the ascents. The route was very difficult from a technical point of view, including a lot of steep gullies and sections where the racers had to carry their skis, ideal conditions for the Spanish athlete. Jornet managed to establish a comfortable lead after the very first, relatively long and steep ascent, maintaining this margin all the way to the finish. He finished with a winning time of 1:52:41.17, more than two minutes ahead of rivals Matheo Jacquemoud (FRA) and Matteo Eydallin (ITA).
"I wasn't feeling completely fit last week so I decided to take a short break at the last minute. It really paid off today, I felt extremely good throughout the entire race. The route also suited me perfectly. It was a difficult race, very long and steep, with a lot of sections where you had to carry your skis. It was a worthy World Cup route for an Individual ski mountaineering race and I'm very happy to have come out as the winner," said Kilian Jornet after the race.
With this victory, Kilian Jornet
is clearly showing his position as one of the main favorites for the World Championship from February 9 to 16, 2013 in Pelvoux (FRA).
