MIKAELA SHIFFRIN: SHE’S ALSO GOT A CRYSTAL GLOBE
Lenzerheide. Perfect dramaturgy: Exactly one month after winning the gold medal in Schladming, Mikaela Shiffrin won the slalom crystal globe in the last race of the season. It seemed to be an impossible mission when she was behind after the first run by 1.17 seconds, but Mika was able to turn everything around for the happy end of her magical season: she finished on the podium at eight out of eleven slaloms, won four times, became world champion and World Cup winner. Just three days after her 18th birthday...
“Behind by 1.17 – what can I do better?“ Mika
’s survey before the 2nd run in Lenzerheide led to a clear result. Mum Eileen, dad Jeff, Atomic ski-tech Kim Erlandson answered, “Just let your ski loose!“ And that was what she did. Riding Redster in perfection, victory of the last race. Mika will take the world championships gold medal and also the slalom crystal globe to the USA. At the beginning of the season she was considered the up-and-coming athlete, now she will return to America as a new superstar. To her most important media appointment in her career: she was invited to be a guest in the David Letterman Late Show. After this she will be known all over America.
A DOWN-TO-EARTH HIGH-FLYER
She was this season’s high-flyer – and yet: in life the young athlete, who is only 18 year old (she celebrated her birthday on 13 March), is just as grounded as secure on the ski. Mikaela has a very refreshing way of dealing with her successes: a lot of genuine appreciation for her competitors and eager to point out that all of her victories are team efforts, “My parents, coaches, teammates, the Atomic crew: WE all have contributed to these success, all of us together.“
