Mikaela Shiffrin. First victory for the shooting star of the Atomic team in Åre. Ski insiders have predicted that Miki, now 17, would be able to win her first World Cup race. It is sensational how she was able to win in Marcel Hirscher style: Full risk and yet secure, dynamic between the gates, high ground speed. She posted on Facebook that the comparison with Marcel Hirscher was the best X-Mas present that one could give her. Now she will celebrate Christmas as the leader of the slalom World Cup.

It is only her second winter in World Cup. Still, for ski experts, Mikaela Shiffrin is not sensational winner despite her youth. Ever since her first top results in this season in the slaloms in Levi (3rd) and Aspen (7th), Miki has been considered as potential winner, many ski experts have been predicting the US girl this since her first FIS race. Extreme ground speed, intuition for the limit on tight radii, her dynamic in the course – these are athletic attributes we know from someone else: Marcel Hirscher.

After the US anthem was played for her for the first time in her career, Mikaela posted how happy she was about the comparison with Marcel on Facebook, “If people say that I raced like Marcel, then this is a great Christmas present.” The comparison makes her confident, “It was much fun to race here. If skiing is fun, it can lead to good results.” That’s how she commented her first World Cup victory.

“I feel how I can really accelerate well with my material. The Redster boot plays a major part in this: The carbon tail give me an extra punch at every turn“, Miki explained. With her first World Cup victory in Åre, she also made herself another Christmas present: she now wears the red jersey of the leader of the slalom World Cup.
